Essex County Hospital Center (Overbrook) an Abandoned Psychiatric
In 1896, a large portion of land was purchased by the Essex County board of Chosen Freeholders; the land was bought to build a new mental institution, known as Overbrook, to replace the overcrowding at the original hospital in Newark. The first building to be built on the property was the "Star Ward". It was a large, x shaped building on the eastern section of the campus.

The Essex County Hospital Center that once went by the name of Overbrook Asylum started out in the 1800s as a general hospital and later turned into a psychiatric center in the mid-1920s. Its campus sat in Cedar Grove with 34-buildings, many of which were used to house patients.

Hallway after hallway, room after room, everything was a mirror image; the hospital was very repetitive in design and architecture. Many of the walls were painted in cheerful colors, but to the patients these probably became the colors associated with isolation and insanity.
